Mandate
The Nairobi Work Programme (NWP) is mandated to advance knowledge-based, inclusive, and action-oriented work on climate adaptation, including by engaging experts representing diverse knowledge holders and by identifying practical options to support implementation of adaptation (see FCCC/SBSTA/2025/4 and FCCC/SBSTA/2022/6).
The NWP is further mandated to organize global and regional in-person events, in combination with virtual engagement, ensuring regional balance and meaningful participation of knowledge users and NWP partners (see FCCC/SBSTA/2021/3 and FCCC/SBSTA/2023/4).
Overview of work and progress to-date
The Nairobi work programme convened 23 knowledge holders and experts from academia, scientific institutions, the private sector, intergovernmental agencies, non-profit organizations, and Indigenous Peoples and local communities.
Through a forward-looking co-creation process, the work unfolded through a series of virtual meetings and culminated in an in-person engagement during Climate Week in Addis Ababa in 2025.
This process generated practical knowledge and approaches to help unlock adaptation finance, including community-based adaptation models, open data systems for resilience, collaborative pipeline development, and aggregation approaches that can help scale finance to where it is most needed.
This work has evolved in close collaboration with Parties, NWP partners, and experts. It has moved from dialogue to the refinement of options and toward pathways for possible uptake and country-driven, country-led implementation.
The event during Climate Week in Yeosu in April 2026 focused on refining practical options and exploring pathways for countries to apply them in flexible and context-specific ways
